The University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Košice organised an open day on Thursday 23 January 2025. Candidates for studies, as well as undecided curious high school students, their teachers, career counsellors and parents had the opportunity to see the individual departments and the university campus.

In the academic year 2025/26 UVLF will open study programmes in general veterinary medicine; food hygiene; pharmacy; cynology; veterinary nursing; human-animal relationship and its use in canister therapy and hippotherapy; feed and food safety; food market and quality; animal welfare and protection. Young people, including applicants with special needs, have already received basic information on the admissions process. They learned more about doctoral, master's and bachelor's degree programmes, the organisation of studies, student life and the varied opportunities for extra-curricular activities. They got to know what the teaching content is all about, but also what the graduates' job opportunities are. They also received important information on when to apply, what to include, who has to do admission interviews and who does not, what they contain, how to complete the necessary knowledge. Candidates must submit their applications to study at UVLF by 31 March 2025.

The only university of its kind in Slovakia is known for offering direct contact with live animals. Visitors to the DOD also had the opportunity to visit the equine and ruminant clinic facilities, including a large animal ultrasound workstation. They saw the small animal clinic at the University Veterinary Hospital as well as the Clinical Skills Centre, where future veterinarians are gaining their first skills in animal care. They also viewed permanent slides and anatomical models, learned about diagnostic methods in veterinary medicine and the principles of studying normal and altered histological structure of organs. The fantastic microorganisms or parasites under the magnifying glass were given space. Visitors were interested in chemistry through different eyes, but also in the nooks and crannies of the pharmacy or the natural pharmacy with medicinal plants and tea tasting. The pharmaceutical technology workplace offered the preparation of gelatin capsules and suppositories. Specialists from the food hygiene study programme offered, among other things, the production and tasting of dairy and vegetable products or the production of original Frankfurter sausages according to a German recipe.

Student clubs prepared rich demonstrations of sports, rescue or hunting cynology, as well as canister therapy or work with birds of prey. The prospective students also learned how to prepare for a veterinary visit with a cat and got to know aquarium and terrarium keeping as a hobby of UVMP students. Throughout the day, they were also able to purchase Q&A publications on biology and chemistry from the university library, which are an excellent help in preparing for the entrance exams.

The history of the university began to be written in 1949. Veterinary and pharmaceutical sciences are studied at UVLF at all three levels of higher education - bachelor's, doctoral, master's and doctoral. The UVLF is attended by 2300 students this academic year, one quarter of whom are young people studying in English. The University's strengths are the high level of practical training and the permanent contact with animals not only in the five clinics, but also on the school farm, in the purpose-built facility for breeding and diseases of wild animals and in the equestrian area. Students gain work experience at the Clinical Skills Centre, the University Veterinary Hospital and the University Pharmacy. The school has its own student residences and a wide range of interest clubs and sports clubs. UVLF has successfully passed both domestic and international accreditation. Thanks to this, veterinarians can work in all EU countries.
