President of the Slovak Republic Zuzana Čaputová visited the University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Košice on Friday, February 7, 2020. Rector Jana Mojžišová introduced her to the only university that educates veterinarians in Slovakia and one of two educates pharmacists. She stressed the high credibility of the university and the leading position among European veterinary schools, as confirmed by international evaluations. She drew attention to the world-supported concept of one health, which focuses on the relationship between animal and human health and the quality of the environment. "If we realize that up to 60 percent of existing infectious diseases in humans are zoonoses, infectious diseases transmitted from animal to human, it is necessary," said Rector Jana Mojžišová.

The university emphasizes the interconnection of study and practical training. Each student is in direct contact with animals. During his studies he gains all skills and after his graduation he can immediately enter the veterinary practice. This is made possible by workplaces available to the school. One of them is the University Veterinary Hospital, the only one of its kind in Slovakia. President Zuzana Čaputová visited a Small Animal Clinic with the Section of Surgery, Orthopaedics, Roentgenology and Reproduction and the Section of Internal Diseases. She also visited the Clinic of Birds, Exotic and Free Living Animals. She could see the work of doctors in the operating room, in individual outpatient clinics, but also in the physiotherapy department where long-term ill patients undergo rehabilitation.

“I'm excited about the information I heard about the university. It is perfect that students have the opportunity to learn in practice, directly with animals. This workplace is well equipped. Although I am not an expert, it is evident at first sight. I was interested that future vets  learn directly in cooperation with doctors and that  is also associated with research. I am very pleasantly surprised, the hospital is a top workplace,” said President Zuzana Čaputová after visiting the University Veterinary Hospital.
